Garden City Toll Booth

Taken from 15 actual photo’s of the area, this 3 foot X 5 foot 1:43 scale diorama depicts what the entrance to the Long Island Motor Parkway from Clinton Avenue in Garden City L.I. looked like circa: 1928. Shown are the parkway bridge, manager’s house and actual toll lodge along with era cars. This is the “Hey Day” of the Long Island Motor Parkway, being heavily used by motorists to get back and forth from NYC to Ronkonkoma out on Long Island.

Over and Under

A depiction of the Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island in 1908. The roadway was the first paved road designed strictly for cars- “The Long Island Motor Parkway”. All cars and figures are custom made, as are the grounds, roadways and overpasses. Period costumes were made from masking tape folded in layers and hand painted. This diorama was created using 15 vintage photo’s taken at the actual event over 100 years ago. This diorama is currently on display at the Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport, L.I. N.Y. The wonderful close-up photographs were taken by Maryann Zakahevsky.

1906 VCR

The Vanderbilt Cup Race was held on Long Island, N.Y. in 1906. This 28” X 48” Diorama depicts the Grandstand Area and the VIP/Press Box.  235 spectators await the signal as the racecar start to come into view: “Car Coming”. The Grandstand and VIP/Press Box area are handmade from balsa wood, the  235 figures costumes are all hand made from duct tape and masking tape folded in layers, all are hand painted. The diorama is 1:35 scale and was created using 15 period photo’s to show what it actually looked like over 100 years ago.
